Walking In: The Environment
A Reiki session typically takes place in a quiet, comfortable room. You will usually find a massage table, soft lighting, and perhaps gentle music. The practitioner creates a calm space so your nervous system can settle before the session begins. You remain fully clothed throughout — there is no undressing involved.
The Intake Conversation
Before beginning, your practitioner will likely ask a few questions. These might cover why you came in, any areas of physical discomfort, recent stressors, or what you are hoping to experience. This is not a medical intake — it is simply a way to orient the session and understand your current state. You do not have to share anything you are not comfortable with.
The Session Itself
You lie down on the table, close your eyes, and try to relax. The practitioner will place their hands lightly on or just above different areas of your body — typically starting at the head and moving down through the torso, legs, and feet. Some practitioners work entirely off the body, never making contact at all. Each hand position is held for a few minutes.
A full session usually runs 45 to 90 minutes. During that time, people commonly report sensations of warmth, tingling, or a heaviness that feels like sinking into the table. Others feel nothing physically at all and simply drift into a deeply relaxed state. Both experiences are completely normal.
What You Might Feel During
Reactions vary widely. Some people feel waves of emotion and may find themselves tearing up unexpectedly — this is considered part of the release process and is not cause for concern. Others fall asleep. Still others remain alert but very still, noticing subtle shifts in how different parts of their body feel. There is no correct response.
Occasionally people report seeing colors or imagery. This is not universal and carries no special significance one way or another — it simply reflects the highly individual nature of how each person processes a deeply relaxed state.
After the Session
When the session ends, you will be given a few moments to reorient before sitting up. Most people feel noticeably calmer and sometimes a little spacey — drink water before driving. Your practitioner may share observations from the session and invite you to share what you noticed.
Some people feel energized afterward. Others feel tired and sleep unusually well that night. A small number feel mildly emotional or physically tender for a day or two following a first session — practitioners call this a detox response, though the mechanism is not clinically established. It typically resolves quickly.
How Many Sessions Do You Need?
There is no standard answer. Some people come in once for curiosity or stress relief and find that sufficient. Others incorporate Reiki into a regular self-care routine — weekly, monthly, or whenever life feels particularly heavy. If you are coming in for a specific issue, most practitioners suggest starting with three to four sessions fairly close together to get a clearer sense of how your body responds before spacing them out.
What Reiki Is Not
Reiki is not a medical treatment and does not replace professional medical or mental health care. A qualified practitioner will never diagnose conditions, prescribe remedies, or suggest you stop conventional treatment. If you encounter a Reiki practitioner making those claims, that is a red flag.
What Reiki is, for most people who try it, is a genuinely relaxing experience that leaves them feeling more settled than when they walked in. That alone is worth a great deal in a world that rarely slows down.
